Introduction to Learning Disabilities

Course aim:

This half-day course provides awareness and develops knowledge of “Learning Disabilities” and effective communication to support the individual.

Learning outcomes:

• Know the importance of a person-centered approach when working with individuals with a learning disability.
• Know the main causes of learning disability
•  Understand the importance of effective communication for individuals with a learning disability
• Outline why it is important to recognize and value an individual with a learning disability as a first person
• Give examples of how to use a person centered approach when working with individuals with a learning disability
• Give example of causes of learning disability
• Outline what is meant by the term learning disability
• Identify the impact effective communication on the lives of individuals with a learning disability
• Give examples of different methods of communication that can be used where individuals have difficulty with spoken language
